Voiceover Script Length: Word Count to Duration Calculator
Voiceover pacing differs from on-camera delivery. Word-count tables for narration, commercials, and e-learning at standard VO speeds.
Voiceover pacing is different from on-camera speaking. Without visuals of a talking head, the audience relies entirely on audio — which means pacing, pauses, and clarity carry even more weight. Here are the standard VO pacing rates and word-count tables for common durations.
Voiceover Pacing by Genre
| Genre | WPM Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial (TV/radio) | 150–170 | Energetic, persuasive, tight timing |
| Narration (documentary) | 130–150 | Measured, authoritative, room for visuals |
| E-learning / training | 120–140 | Slower for comprehension, clear enunciation |
| Audiobook | 150–170 | Steady pacing, varies with character voices |
| IVR / phone menus | 120–130 | Very clear, deliberate, easy to understand on a phone speaker |
| Explainer video | 140–160 | Friendly, conversational, synced to animation |
Word Count by Duration
Use these tables to plan your script length before sending it to a VO artist (or recording it yourself).
At 130 WPM (Narration / E-Learning)
| Duration | Word Count |
|---|---|
| 15 sec | ~33 |
| 30 sec | ~65 |
| 60 sec | ~130 |
| 2 min | ~260 |
| 5 min | ~650 |
| 10 min | ~1,300 |
At 160 WPM (Commercial / Explainer)
| Duration | Word Count |
|---|---|
| 15 sec | ~40 |
| 30 sec | ~80 |
| 60 sec | ~160 |
| 2 min | ~320 |
| 5 min | ~800 |
| 10 min | ~1,600 |

Factors Beyond Word Count
Word count gives you a solid estimate, but the final duration can shift based on:
- Pauses. A dramatic pause between sentences adds 1–3 seconds. Frequent pauses (common in e-learning) can add 10–15% to the total duration.
- Pronunciation. Technical terms, brand names, and foreign words take longer to enunciate than common vocabulary.
- Emphasis. When a VO artist stresses certain words, they naturally slow down. Heavy emphasis throughout a script adds time.
- Direction notes. If your script includes "[pause 2 sec]" or "[slow down here]" markers, account for those in your time estimate.
Pricing Context
Many voiceover artists charge by the finished minute or by word count. Knowing your script's word count helps you get accurate quotes:
- Use script stats to get an exact word count (including counts with and without spaces for billing purposes).
- Use the read-time estimator to estimate the finished duration at the appropriate VO pace.
Both tools are free and require no signup — paste, check, and send the numbers to your VO artist or client.
